Do you feel it? That knot of shame in your belly that swallows you whole and threatens to leave you hiding in the dark, alone? That feeling is the familiar grip of fear that God will look at my most recent fall from grace with disgust and condemnation. Yea, Yea, I know God says my sins are forgiven but there has to be a limit on how many times I can fail at the same thing before He gives up on me and moves on. I’m hopeless! I will never learn!

Jane slumped into the chair as a long-overdue sigh escaped her pursed lips. Looking at the floor, she said, “I screwed up again. There never seems to be an end to it. No matter how hard I try, I fail.” After her reluctant confession gushed out, silence hung over the room. She twisted and worried a Kleenex in her hands. The words hung there, and I sat silently. Secretly, I was praying for a response. Well, not just a response, but God’s response. Then I said it.

Kaylee felt alone, unanchored, and emotionally adrift. Disappointments, loss of a loved one, stress over money, and so much of her life turned upside down due to COVID left her feeling alone and overwhelmed. The Christmas season seemed to magnify her losses and pain. Her best efforts to cope by escaping with alcohol or trying to control the uncontrollable made it worse, not better. Faith is not the absence of fear. Therefore faith requires courage. When I resigned to stay home with my children, it was fearful. Can we really afford this? Can I do it? When I started going to church for the first time in my life, it was fearful. I’m a fish out of water. I don’t fit in. What am I doing? When I was asked to teach Sunday school, it was fearful. How am I going to teach? And the Bible of all things! As I continued walking with God and being led by the Spirit, God brought me further into His perfect plan. Each time it included surrendering self-reliance and trusting God to enable me to do His will. It was scary. It is no different today then the day I resigned to stay home with my children. I still don’t feel qualified or adequate. Nor can I see how God is causing all things to work together. But I believe it.

God isn’t good because He is good to me. He is good because that is who He is. God isn’t loving because He loves me.

hey crucified Him. It was so dark. Everyone felt the holy hush fall upon the earth. Everyone knew something was different. The separation of death hung in the air in a whole new way.

A Bethlehem tour guide told the tourist that Mary and Joseph normally would have stayed with relatives in Bethlehem. Because of the circumstances of Mary's pregnancy, they were not welcomed by their own relatives.

The Father gave His Son; He dwelt among us full of grace and truth. You, the old man, was crucified with the Son, so that the old man—the power of sin—would be taken out of the way. You, the new man, was raised to new life indwelt by the Son. This is the greatest exchange of Christmas.

There couldn’t be a change of behavior until there was a change of identity. We were born sinners and sinners sin. In fact, they are slaves to sin. Sinners who clean up their sins, still only have “filthy rags”.
